The Difference between Scents and Lures

Ground Scents and lures are really two things. It can be confusing to know which to use and at what time. Scents are the actual smells of the animal, and lures are formulated smells that attract the animal through one or more reactions.

Deer scent smells like deer and is usually urine. This scent is a confidence builder in deer because it makes them believe there are, or were, other deer in the area. Tarsal gland scents may trigger a territorial response in an aggressive buck defending his territory during the pre-rut and rut. Doe-in-estrus scent appeals to a buck's sexual urges and also is effective during the rut.

Lures are formulated smells that trigger responses or behavior in deer. Lures are categorized as food, curiosity, territorial and call.

Food lures trigger hunger in deer and can include the concentrated smells of corn, apple or acorn. Curiosity lures intrigue deer. Deer are naturally curious and they will search out smells that excite them or that they have never encountered before. Beaver castor and tonquin musk are examples of curiosity lures. Territorial lures are a lot like scents. They include deer urine, as well as glands, secretions and musks. These lures create territorial urges in a buck, who thinks another buck has invaded his territory. Call lures combine food, territorial and curiosity smells with a carrier to help the lure reach out a longer distance. Skunk essence, synthetic fermented egg and fish oil are call lures that can help bring a buck the hunter's way. Deer scents and territorial lures are most effective during the rut. Food and curiosity lures can be used earlier in the season when a deer's focus is on eating, not mating.
